Turbinella Pyrum, common name of this shankh is chank shell. This is a sacred chank or shankh. It is also known as the divine conch. The scientific name of this shankh is Turbinella Pyrum. The family name is Turbinellidae. This is found in the Indian Ocean.
The name “chank” for this shell is derived from the Indian word shankha, the divine conch. The old generic name was Xancus. The Dutch used to call this variety as”Chianco”.
It is called Vamavarti because if you hold the shankh with the tip towards your body the empty space would on the left. If this empty is on the right it is called as Dakshinavarti Shankh.
